The office of Deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of
sympathy, witness and service after the example of Jesus Christ. G-6.0401
Book of Order, Presbyterian
Church USA.
It is the duty of deacons, first of all, to minister to
those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in
distress both within and beyond the community of faith.
They shall assume such other duties as may be delegated to them from time
to time by the session. G-6.0402
Book of Order, PCUSA.
There are 15 Deacons at Neelsville Presbyterian Church.
Each is elected to a three year term.
The membership of the church is divided between those 15 Deacons (called
flocks). Each flock contains
between 15 and 20 families. It is
the duty of each Deacon to maintain contact with their flock and see to any
needs, both spiritual and earthly, that might occur as well as keeping the flock
abreast of the happenings of the church.
The Board of Deacons is responsible for the Adopt-A-Need
program which offers services such as meals to families that need assistance, as
well as the Fellowship Committee which sponsors social gatherings for the
congregation.
Deacon Ministries also maintains oversight of the following committees;
Prayer Chain – both e-mail and phone.
Young at Hearts – luncheons for Seniors
